Curriculum Map

In 2019/20, we  worked with the curriculum leads in pyramid schools to develop our 'Big Ideas' curriculum, ensuring that the key skills and essential knowledge we have identified permeate our curriculum from year 5 to year 8, allowing our pupils to make links in their learning as well as develop the ability to think more deeply about what they are learning. In this respect, pupils’ learning is meaningful and purposeful, and designed in a range of contexts, which offer breadth and variety to their learning.

The National Curriculum divides this subject

into three components – speaking and listening, reading, and writing. Much of the work takes place during French lessons. In year 5 and 6, French lessons are fun. During their time at WMMS, we ensure pupils develop a passion for the language. We believe in offering a cultural experience to all pupils and so base topics around this. The topics are chosen specifically to link with the national curriculum to ensure their learning is beneficial and current. In KS2, a lot of the learning is based on literary texts to ensure pupils can read, write and ask and answer questions about these stories. Pupils learn about the solar system in French, read 'Goldilocks' and watch 'Ratatouille' when learning about food.

In KS3, there is a particular focus on translation when reading and writing; which is extremely prominent in the new GCSE. Pupils learn this skill through a range of topics such as creating their own recipe for crepes!

In year 7 and 8, there is also an emphasis on acquiring language to develop independence and confidence. Pupils learn to manipulate the language and use it in a fun way. They study the film ‘le petit prince en vacances’ and write a film review to practise their writing skills,  become tourists in the classroom and travel virtually around France where they have to do a lot of speaking and listening in order to get around!

Also, at West Moors Middle School, pupils can learn other languages in a termly club.
